Busy coding away

May 7, 2008

It’s been quiet for a while on this blog but that doesn’t mean we’re not busy with cool new stuff. As we speak, we are working on the release of an Open Social widget (first implementation for Dutch social network Hyves), personalized URL’s, a LinkedIn resume importer, and the implementation of OpenID. Keep you posted!

More than half Dutchies aware of online identity

April 7, 2008

Interesting research by Dutch research agency Ruigrok | Netpanel among online Dutch people about their online identity. Of this group, 51% says they are aware of the fact that they have an online identity. That means the rest isn’t to the same degree. I’ll definitely expect that group to become smaller in the near future.

Of the group who is aware of their online identity people will start looking for tools to get some degree of control over it. We think we can offer them an easy and user-friendly option.

More interesting statistics (Dutch only):

  • 27% Googles’ themselves now and then;
  • 27% Googles’ their friends;
  • and 25% Googles’ their family members with any regularity.

Are you satisfied with what people see when people enter your name in a search engine?

New languages supported

March 17, 2008

Until today, it was possible to show your personal website in either English or Dutch. Today, we added two new languages to this list: Spanish and German. A big thanks to the following people for offering their help in translating the texts: Donald Boers (Madrid, Spain) and Willem van Maasdijk (Quito, Ecquador) for Spanish and Alexander Schardt (Germany) for German!

Good to know that Russian, Bulgarian and Italian are already planned and will be available soon.

If you want your language available as well, and want to offer you help by translating, please send us an email. It will take you only 15 minutes and makes your website even more personal. And we’re adding a page to the site soon where you will get an honourable mention :-)

RealMee featured in German blog

March 9, 2008

Last week RealMee got featured in German blog zweinull.cc. They did a really comprehensive review. Go check it out if you master the German language. BTW we are working on getting the German version of your personal website at RealMee in the air. Expect it to go live this week. Keep you posted.

The Next Web

February 29, 2008

RealMee is featured on the Next Web blog. Nice overview of the service by Ernst-Jan. Also check the comment I made regarding the longer term perspective and implications of RealMee.

Monitor and influence your online identity

February 26, 2008

Nice post over at ReadWriteWeb that discusses various services with which you can track your online identity. Monitoring is one thing, but as one of the commenters remarks it is just as important to get info out there on the Web that you explicitly want people to see in order to be able to control your online identity. RealMee is one of the tools you can use to do just this, as I replied in the comments as well.

Yes, new features again

February 11, 2008

We have implemented measures to make RealMee even more secure by adding SSL on specific areas of the site. This means that private information such as your email address and password are now encrypted when you are using the website. This will make it more difficult for other parties to intercept this information and misuse it. The following areas are secured: the page where you create your personal website, the login popup, the recover password popup, the ‘change email’, ‘change password’ and ‘your secret key’ fields in the area of the site where you edit your personal website.

We have also changed the design of the personal website edit area a bit by introducing tabs to visually differentiate between the multiple language versions of your personal website.

The last update we did concerns the use of iFrames on your personal website to display widgets. This will improve the performance of the page, e.g. speed of loading the page, but also to make the page more xHTML compliant so other web applications can read the information on your page more easy.

More RealMee goodies

January 23, 2008

We haven’t sat still… I am glad to announce a few new features:

  1. If you use a picture at your personal website you could change it in the past by uploading a new picture. You couldn’t delete it altogether. Now you can.
  2. You can now change the section titles on your personal website like you want. This means you aren’t bound to our sloppy English anymore.
  3. We have implemented an RSS-feed for your status messages. Check out mine here:
http://www.realmee.com/en/1/ronald-carpentier/status/. This means you can now use your status messages at RealMee to set your status at Twitter or Jaiku. The other way around was already possible off course. It also enables your visitors to subscribe to your status feed in a feed reader if they want to keep track of you.
  4. We have implemented an additional microformat called vCalendar for your birthday. This means your visitors can add a reminder for your next birthday to their agendas which should pay off for you in terms of nice messages and presents.
  5. Lastly, we have implemented some new icons on your website to indicate the presence of the RSS feed, vCalendar and vCard.

If you have any feedback or suggestions please feel free to drop me a line at infoatrealmeedotcom. In the meantime, we will keep working on cool new stuff.

Identity and people search

January 9, 2008

Well, people search is an area which attracts a lot of players! New on the scene is BigSight, which is a people search engine. Check the coverage by TechCrunch here. There are a number of differences between our services, one of the main ones being that we try to piggyback on those other tools people use to track people: search engines. Let’s see how this plays out.

Looking for a New Year’s resolution?

January 2, 2008

Well, we couldn’t agree more with the advice of Seth Godin: Google yourself. Not happy with the result? Obviously, we suggest you make your own RealMee website. It will only take you 1 minute to setup. As a result, you will be found by people looking for you in search engines the way you want. You can always start a blog later if you’ve got more to tell :-)

BTW: Happy New Year to you!
